THIS WEEK: PROBLEM SOLVING VIA PUZZLE PIECES
Have you ever felt overwhelmed when faced with a project or problem?
Cleaning up after a family holiday meal, cleaning out the garage,
completing a project for school or work?
At times I do. It happened once when I had 3 projects suddenly going at once -
1. updating paper files & folders (all materials scattered over the floor)
2. revamping a foster parent orientation training program (ditto the floor)
3. starting a new “personal dynamics growth” group
(referral forms scattered all over the desk & calls to be made)
4. when a 4th was added to the mix - ALL the work (notes, forms, reports, etc.)
that I had done over the last 6 months WERE DELETED from my computer!
I was literally pulling my hair & hyperventilating not knowing where to start.
It all had to be done. So much was connected to & dependent on the other.
For several moments I was paralyzed.
Then I remembered. Children have it right. Play is the thing.
It’s unfortunate that we de-emphasis the importance of play in children’s life
& almost completely banish it from our adult lives.
Every game & toy children experience teaches.
How to win & lose gracefully, when to follow the rules, when to adjust them
& how to see the big picture by seeing & working on the small ones.
So I took a deep breath & stopped looking at the picture on the puzzle box & started looking at the individual pieces of the puzzle -
a technique I have been using & teaching others to use for years that works.
Tool 1: Take a deep breath, really!
When we don’t get enough air our brain shuts off & we can’t think -
so breathe deeply & slowly several times to get the thought process going again.
Tool 2: look for a 1st puzzle piece. When we look at the “big completed picture”
we are at the wrong end of the puzzle. Select 1 piece & get it put into place.
(I started with everything on the floor - it was unavoidably in sight & underfoot - so I sorted & stacked & put it away so I didn’t have to touch or see it constantly).
Tool 3: Congratulate yourself! No it’s not all done & yet something is.
Pat yourself on the back before moving to the next puzzle piece.
Tool 4: Pick another piece & keep moving forward using Tools 1 - 3 as needed.
Don’t go back even if you discover something left over/undone from a previous part of the puzzle. (There can be exceptions but few).
Put it aside until the MAJOR pieces are done.
Tool 5: Now clean up those stray leftovers & enjoy the completed puzzle.
Since my puzzle is done for the week (this Elevator) I get to celebrate with a good book. Remember to always Celebrate accomplishments.
We change to some basic, important emotions next week. You'll want to be here.
Please forward/share this to others you know so they’ll grow right along with you.
